‘Gypsy’ Dances To The Wagon Wheel
Another winner is currently running at the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw. Loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of the famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, and her mother Rose, comes the musical “Gypsy.”
The most famous stage mom in show business, Mama Rose, will be dancing into the Wagon Wheel Theatre through Saturday, July 12.
Although at first glance you may think this musical focuses on Gypsy’s story, it actually tells the tale of Mama Rose. Part overprotective, demanding mother and part warm, loving mama, Rose (Carrie McNulty) is the real star of the show.
Returning to the Wagon Wheel after “being away for far too long,” McNulty said, “I feel truly fortunate to come back and play this iconic role, directed by one of my best friends (Tony Humrichouser), at a theatre and community I share a rich history with. This is an experience I will hold close to my heart, and the support of the team both past and present at the Wheel has been amazing!”
McNulty’s performance is spot on and her rendition of such a hit as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” is lovely.
“Gypsy” tells the story of Mama Rose, a beyond determined stage mom trying to make her daughters into vaudeville performers. Starring as daughters, the young Baby June and Baby Louise, are Ellie Irwin and Faith Delp. These girls are adorable and flawless.
As the daughters grow up, the actresses change. Louise (Rachel Eskenazi-Gold) and June (Jillian Slade) meld right in with their younger counterparts. But even years later, Mama Rose is still trying to get her daughters an act in vaudeville. Unfortunately for the ever success-seeking Rose, Baby June would rather be a wife than a performer. So then it’s Baby Louise’s turn to take the spotlight. But who’s really the star, Mama Rose or Louise?
It is only when agent Herbie (Matthew Janisse) books Louise in a burlesque act rather than a vaudeville act on accident Rose’s dream of having her daughter make it big becomes a reality. Unfortunately though, this also means her daughter pushes her mother farther away as Louise is transformed into Gypsy Rose Lee.
Perhaps the best scene in “Gypsy” comes in the second act, when Mazeppa (Katie Finan), Electra (Christiani Pitts) and Tessie Tura (Jennifer Dow) sing the uproarious “You Gotta Get a Gimmick.” These three burlesque dancers stole the show with this routine and it was an audience favorite. But of course the wonderful Jennifer Dow is perfect in each and every role at the Wagon Wheel.
Although “Gypsy” does end with a “strip routine,” this musical never goes over a PG-13 rating. In fact, it is only in the last few scenes of the musical where burlesque comes in at all.
“Gypsy” is another entertaining, wonderfully produced musical. The sets, music, costumes and acting are nothing short of an A+.
