July Talk Coming to Indianapolis
Alt-blues rock band July Talk recently released their debut US EP “Guns + Ammunition” on Island Records and are taking it on the road through North America, including a stop at Radio Radio in Indianapolis on Oct. 11.
Teaming up with aggressively entertaining veterans, The Presidents Of The United States Of America and Rural Alberta Advantage, July Talk will be bringing their unique blend of chaos and seduction to stages in every corner of the country beginning next week in Colorado.
On “Guns + Ammunition,” the first single from the band’s release, singer Peter Dreimanis’s raspy growl clashes with Leah Fay’s sweet and poignant vocals, channeling the five-piece band’s pure and brutal emotionalism into wickedly sharp lyrics. The monochrome single-shot video for the band’s lead single, “Guns + Ammunition”, illustrates the conflict between the male and female dynamic with Dreimanis’s and Fay’s lyrical faceoffs – a harshly beautiful concoction producing a sound that boils down to “Tom Waits-meets-Wolf-Parade” according to “Consequence of Sound.”
July Talk has received critical praise for their emotionally intricate and contradiction-driven dynamic. “The contrast between Dreimanis’ Tom Waits-ish growl and Fay’s soprano is remarkable. It just works,” raves NPR’s World Café Next, while “Brooklyn Vegan” proclaims: “July Talk are led by two co-lead singers, Peter Dreimanis whose got a growl not unlike Man Man or maybe Tom Waits, and Leah Fay whose softer vocals recall fellow Toronto indie bands Stars or Metric.” The band was also awarded “Best Alternative Group of the Year” at the 2014 Canadian Sirius XM Indie Awards and scored a nomination for “Breakthrough Group of the Year” at the 2014 Juno Awards.
July Talk was formed in 2012 after Peter Dreimanis heard Leah Fay singing at a local bar in Toronto, and knew he met his match. They linked up with guitarist Ian Docherty, bassist Josh Warburton and drummer Danny Miles to develop a signature sound that is both boldly intimate and wildly confrontational, honed through relentless touring. Behind the visual and vocal hooks lie a wall of hard and tight, blues-rooted guitar rock produced by Alexandre Bonenfant [Metz, Crystal Castles]. The band quickly gained a reputation for their high-energy and magnetic shows, opening for Billy Talent, Matt Mays, Arkells, Sam Roberts, and Besnard Lakes.
The “Guns + Ammunition” EP, featuring their single of the same title, is now available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. The full tracklist and album art are available below.
