Mattel’s Barbie Is Getting A Makeover
The toy company Mattel has announced a new “Fashionista” line of Barbie dolls that the company says will reflect a more diverse array of skin tones, hair colors, eye colors and facial constructions.
The popular doll’s makeover also includes adjustable ankles that will allow her to wear either high heels or flats. In the past the feet have always been formed to fit into high heels only.
Barbie has been one of the world’s most popular dolls for more than 50 years, with over 1 billion sold around the globe. However, Mattel’s ranking as the top toymaker in the world was surpassed by Lego last year and Barbie was bumped from her 11 year reign as the top toy for the 2014 holiday season by Elsa from “Frozen.”
Consumers have been calling for changes in the Barbie doll line for years, asking that the toy icon reflect positive ideas and images for girls. While there’s no direct indication that the newly announced options are in response to any specific incident, Mattel seems to be making a clear statement that change is welcome.
