Cattle Saved, Barn A Total Loss
SYRACUSE — A barn, believed to have been built in the 1930s, was destroyed late Monday night, April 22, on the Roberts Family Farmland LLC, 8464 N. Syracuse-Webster Road, Syracuse. The loss has been estimated at over $100,000.
Turkey Creek Fire Territory Chief Mickey Scott stated a passing motorist called 911 at approximately 11:06 p.m. North Webster Fire Department was immediately called for a full assist and Milford Fire Department was called for a tanker assist. When the first firefighters arrived at the scene the barn was fully engulfed.
Firefighters, while battling the blaze, worked to protect a herd of Angus cattle in a feed lot immediately east of the burning barn. No cattle were injured or lost.
According to Jon Roberts and Scott, the barn contained tractors, equipment, mowers and skid loaders. A semitractor sitting next to the barn, on the west, was also destroyed.
Roberts noted the barn was a wooden structure with a metal roof. He is thankful no firefighter was injured in battling the blaze.
Turkey Creek Fire Territory was called back out to the fire at 5:23 a.m. today, Tuesday, April 23, for a small rekindle.
