Margaret ‘Maggie’ Smith
Margaret “Maggie” Smith, 98, died Saturday, July 4, 2020.
A Syracuse pioneer and friend passed away peacefully on her 98th birthday on July 4, 2020. She was born July 4, 1922.
In 1949, Margaret “Maggie” Smith and her deceased husband Merl, founded the first summer camp in the USA for marching bands, drum majors, cheerleaders, drill teams, golfers, baton twirlers and color guards. The Smith Walbridge Camp continues to lead the innovations for summer music camps, internationally and domestically. The camp property and facilities were sold in 1990, but the clinics have continued to operate at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill.
Her surviving children include her sons, Gary (Bev) Smith and Greg (Irina Vichnevskaia) Smith; three grandchildren, Sean, Stuart and Allison Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Margo Smith, Stefan Smith, Galen Smith and Tristan Smith.
A graveside memorial service for family will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16, at Syracuse Cemetery.
