Discovery Leads To Bomb Squad Activation
News Release
WARSAW — A surprising discovery on Monday, Sept. 21, led to the activation of the Elkhart Police Department Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, according to a press release from Sgt. Chris Francis, public information officer for the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office.
Police did not release the address where the incident happened but confirmed it was in Wayne Township.
A man who had been sifting through old family boxes in an outbuilding found what he believed to be a “pineapple” hand grenade, the news release said.
KCSO deputies secured the scene and contacted Elkhart PD which provides bomb squad support for Kosciusko County.
Bomb technicians performed an x-ray of the object and made the determination that it did contain live ordinance. The hand grenade was placed into a containment unit and transported from the scene for disposal.
