Wawasee Sports Wrap – May 22
GOLFERS STUMBLE AT COLUMBIA CITY
Recent developments have not been kind to the Wawasee golf team. Beginning its season 7-3 in duals, Wawasee dropped seven of its final eight head-to-head matchups, including a 175-189 loss to Columbia City at Eagle Glen.
Dustin Perrett was medalist on the night with a 40 to pace the home-sided Eagles. Drew Benedict shot a 43, Drew Burnsworth a 44 and Trent Murphy a 48 to conclude the City scoring. Tristen Atwood led Wawasee (8-10) with a 42, followed by a 44 from Dylan Cousins, 46 from Derek Zurcher and 47 from Luke Jackson.
The Wawasee JV did beat Columbia City 186-207, led by a 44 from Jordan Melching.
“A pretty bad night for us,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “We played the back nine, which is the tricky side and we simply didn’t handle it well.”
Wawasee will look to regroup with a little over a week off before taking to the Warsaw Boys Golf Sectional on June 1 at Stonehenge Country Club. The top three teams and top three individuals from non-advancing teams will move to the Homestead Regional on June 7 at Orchard Ridge Golf Club.
