Warrant, Drug Find Part of Checkpoint
A Mentone sobriety checkpoint conducted Friday night led to several violations, but two noteworthy arrests were also made.
Officers from all over Kosciusko County converged in Mentone Friday evening to conduct one of several summertime DUI sobriety checkpoints to curb drunk driving, but it also unveiled two wanted individuals who were taken into custody. The checkpoint was located in the parking lot of Lake City Bank in Mentone.
Demario Maurice Loston, 35, Warsaw, was preliminarily arrested during the checkpoint operation on outstanding warrants issued by the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office. Loston’s original charges were felony domestic battery, battery with bodily injury, residential entry, and failure to appear. He’s being held on a $125,000 bond.Officers also arrested a Rochester man on drug charges after allegedly finding 50 grams of marijuana during the checkpoint stop.
Cyrus Benjamin Withers, 24, was arrested and preliminarily charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance (prescription medication). Withers was being held on a $2,000 bond by the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officers documented 146 vehicles that entered the sobriety checkpoint, which was operated from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.Officers taking part in the program were from the Kosciusko County Traffic Safety Partnership that include the following agencies: Warsaw Police Department, Winona Lake Police Department, North Webster Police Department, Syracuse Police Department, Milford Police Department, Mentone Police Department, Claypool Police Department, Silver Lake Police Department and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
