Uceny Falls Again, Dream Dashed
For a second time, a fall has taken Morgan Uceny out of championship contention.
In lap three of the of the 1,500-meter final Friday, Uceny became tangled up as the pack began its sprint to the finish line. Uceny would up falling, taking herself from an outside front position to out of the race altogether. The agony of the fall was the second time Uceny has fallen during a championship run, also falling at the 2011 World Championships.
Uceny had maintained a low profile during the first two laps of the race, staying to the outside and right of the leader, Gamze Bulut of Turkey, for the first two laps. As runners began their push to separate from the pack, Uceny met her dreadful fate.
Turkey’s Asli Cakir Alptekin would win the race and the gold medal with a time of 4:10.23 followed by Bulut at 4:10.40 for the silver medal. Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Ethiopia earned bronze at 4:10.74.
American Shannon Rowbury was sixth overall with a time of 4:11.26.
