Warsaw Sports Wrap – Aug. 30
Nikki LaLonde and Alexis Manwaring led the way Thursday as the Warsaw girls golf team wrapped up its regular-season play in the Northern Lakes Conference with a 63-shot victory.
LaLonde shot a 42 to capture medalist honors and Manwaring had a 43 as the Tigers handily defeated Elkhart Memorial 177-240 in NLC action at the Christiana Creek Country Club in Elkhart.
Elizabeth Meadows shot a 44, Morgan Sands 48 and Ashley Murrell 57 for coach Chris LaLonde’s team.
Warsaw improves to 10-1 overall and concludes NLC play in second place for the regular season at 6-1 (with just a loss to NorthWood). Undefeated NorthWood beat Wawasee and Northridge Thursday to finish 7-0 in NLC action.
Kaylin Byers led Memorial, which finishes 0-7 in league play, with a 57.
Warsaw hosts Manchester next Thursday (Sept. 6) in the regular-season finale and Senior Night at Stonehenge at 4:30 p.m. The NLC Tournament is Sept. 8 at Bent Oak in Elkhart with the sectional slated for Sept. 15 at Stonehenge.
Tennis Team Stays Unbeaten In NLC
A pair of doubles wins propelled Warsaw past Plymouth 3-2 in a Northern Lakes Conference boys tennis match Thursday.
The host Tigers got straight set wins from AJ Herendeen and Sam Rice at No. 1 and from Will Petro and Connor Singrey at No. 2. Each of the Warsaw doubles teams posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Warsaw also got a win at No. 2 singles as Evan Miller defeated Tom Felke 6-3, 6-3.
Coach Rick Orban’s team improved to 5-2 overall and stayed unbeaten in league play at a perfect 3-0.
Plymouth won at No. 1 singles as Gabe Vervyneckt defeated Kyle Wettschurack 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3 and John Hunter topped AJ Jansen 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Warsaw won the JV match by an 8-4 final. Winning for the JV Tigers were Nick Hamrick, Nic Jansen, Drew Schram and Caleb Ray in singles play. Also winning were the doubles teams of Christopher Herendeen and Caleb Snyder, Nikos Schlitt and Caleb DeBoest, Andrew Cox and Wesley Shuler and Mario Hernandez and Cole Baker.
Warsaw looks to stay undefeated in the NLC with a league match at Northridge Tuesday.
