Grace College Sports Wrap – Sept. 11
The Grace College men’s tennis team, in a dramatic, highly emotional Crossroads League match with Taylor University, came away with a 6-3 road win on Tuesday.
Four of the six singles matches went into three sets as the Lancers (3-1; 3-1 CL) pulled out timely wins across the board.
The Lancers nearly swept the doubles competition with only a 9-8 defeat at No. 3 doubles for Michael Humphrey and Jack Wang preventing them.
Michael Blevins and Nikola Todorovic won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Daniel Sanchez and Aaron Blevins won 8-3 at No. 2.
Sanchez was untouchable at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Michael Humphrey eased away with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
The remaining four singles matches went into a third set, setting up the dramatic final point.
Freshman Ricardo Bedon was called on to play his first collegiate match at No. 6 singles for Jack Wang (sickness). Their match split the first two sets 6-3 and 4-6 before Bedon won the day for Grace with a 6-4 victory.
Michael Blevins went on to add a sixth point to Grace’s tally with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
“Taylor played extremely well today, and we held our ground,” said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. “We are happy to get out of there with another league win. We are looking forward to the ITA’s this weekend.”
The Lancers will head to the ITA Tournament for the remainder of the week in their break from the league competition.
