Steven Wayne Mort
Steven Wayne Mort, 50, of Pierceton, Ind., passed away at 9:59 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at South Bend Memorial Hospital as the result of an automobile accident.
He was born on April 6, 1962, in Columbia City, Ind., the son of Rex D. and Mary Jane (Tenney) Mort.
He spent his lifetime in the Pierceton area graduating from Whitko High School with the Class of 1981, where he excelled in basketball, baseball and football. He attended Glenoaks College, Centerville, Mich., with a basketball scholarship and graduated from Huntington College. For many years he worked on the Mort Family Farm. He also worked for Northern Lakes Electric, Warsaw, and for the past 15 years, he was a woodwork finisher for J. C. Hamman Construction, Leesburg. He loved to garden and was an avid golfer, deer hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his long-time companion: Melissa D. McKinney, Pierceton; four children: Samantha A. (Chris Staley) Mort, Austin D. Mort, Blase M. McKinney and Aressa A. Tackwell, all of Pierceton; his father: Rex D. Mort, Pierceton; his mother: Mary Jane (Mike) Layton, Fla.; a granddaughter: Lexee Grace Staley, Pierceton; two brothers: Tim A. and Mark W. (Mary) Mort, both of Pierceton; two nephews: Justin (Alicia) Mort, Leesburg; and Dillon Mort, Pierceton; and a step-grandfather: Ralph Thomas, Fort Wayne.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the funeral home with Sharon Brockhaus, Certified Funeral Celebrant officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Mort Grandchildren Educational Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
