Ostrom Leads Cardinals On Links
Ball State University freshman golfer Tyler Ostrom led his team after first-round play Monday in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in Muncie.
Ostrom, a 2012 WCHS graduate, fired a one-under round of 69 in the tourney being held at the Delaware Country Club.
Nick Huggins of Northern Illinois shot 67 on the par 70, 6,438-yard layout to lead after the opening round. Ostrom and Joe Cooper of Bowling Green were tied for second place at 69. Ostrom shot 34 and 35 for his round of 69.
Play was suspended Monday night in the second round. The tourney’s start was delayed Monday morning due to debris on the course from Sunday’s high winds. Play is set to resume today at 9 a.m. with the completion of the second round, followed by the third and final round.
There is no team scoring for the invitational, which is named in honor of former longtime BSU golf coach and Sports Information Director Earl Yestingsmeier. There are 47 golfers in the field from nine schools; Ball State, Bowling Green, Indiana University, Iowa, IUPUI, Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo.
Ostrom was a three-time, All-State selection for coach Ben Barkey’s program at WCHS. He won the individual state championship in 2011, setting a state record with a 63 in the first round.
