Area Gridders Lauded By AP
A handful of area prep football players earned honorable mention honors on the Associated Press All-State team announced Friday.
Headlining the list of local standouts to be honored is Warsaw’s Tristan McClone in Class 5-A. The junior tailback set a school single-season rushing record this fall with 1,718 yards, breaking the old standard of 1,652 set in 1972 by Rod Wildman. McClone, who led coach Phil Jensen’s Tigers to a 6-4 mark, scored 16 touchdowns and also broke the single-game rushing mark with 322 yards in a five-touchdown performance in a victory at Northridge.
A trio of juniors from the Tippecanoe Valley football program received honorable mention All-State accolades among Class 3-A players. Tabbed from coach Jeff Shriver’s Viking squad, which went 8-3 overall and earned a share of the Three Rivers Conference title at 6-1, were Ben Shriver (quarterback/defensive back), Tanner Andrews (receiver) and Ben Sponseller (defensive back).
Triton’s Cody Shively, a junior linebacker, was among the Class 1-A players to earn honorable mention honors.
