Winter Class Registration At YMCA
Kosciusko Community YMCA will be starting winter classes on Jan. 7. Classes will run through Feb. 17.
Classes in Youth Development will include sports classes for preschoolers, swim lessons, and gymnastics classes for all ages.
Classes that promote the Healthy Living aspect of your Y will include group exercise classes at both the Smith Street and North Webster branches, classes for older adults and water aerobics in both the warm water and lap pools. The majority of group exercise and water aerobics classes are now included with a Y membership, but even those without a membership can take classes.
Registration for these classes is underway now and can take place at the North Webster or the Smith Street branch or online at www.kcymca.org.
Back again will be the popular Sports of All Sorts Class led by Youth and Family Director Ben Reno. Before kids get to school, the preschool classes give them a chance to interact with other kids while improving skills, making new friends and being active. Sports of all Sorts for ages 3 to 6 is a fun, non-competitive atmosphere for preschoolers to learn about a new sport each week.
New this session in group exercise the Y will be offering a Women and Weights class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Women and Weights is for those women who have been intimidated to start a weight training program, or have had trouble committing to a weight lifting workout.
Women and Weights will familiarize you with the equipment and give you a group of accountability partners. In addition to the regular cycling classes offered in the morning and evening, the Y will be adding a Beginner Indoor Cycling Class that lasts 45 minutes and is geared toward the beginning cyclist.
Also new this coming year, the Lifestyle Change Support Group will be led by personal trainers, for Y members having trouble making a healthy lifestyle change. They will discuss the steps to making workouts a habit, ways to make positive choices, and hold participants accountable to their goals. There is no need to wear workout clothing; this is a sit down support group meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 8, Feb. 5, March 5 and March 26.
In partnership with the Wabash County Tobacco Free Coalition, Sensational Cessation class will be offered on Wednesdays, Jan. 9, through Feb. 6 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Y this winter to help adult tobacco users quit the habit, using a diet and exercise program. Participants of the class will receive a workbook for guidance during and after the class, diet information and instruction to help with a diet that will help control weight while quitting, stress release techniques to help overcome the urge to use tobacco and exercise instruction to help establish a program to help with cardiopulmonary recovery.
Enjoy the rewards of life-long learning while gaining the skills to connect to the Spanish speaking members of our community. The Adult Beginner Spanish course starting Jan. 7 will be a basic course offering introductory Spanish for adults. Participants will learn to listen, speak, read and write using music, stories and conversation. The course will also encourage cultural awareness.Taught by Benjamin Navarro, Professor of Spanish at Grace College for 16 years, the class meets on Mondays, Jan. 7, through Feb. 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. or Thursdays, Feb. 14, through March 28, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Let’s Get Technical offers basic instruction on a set topic related to technology each month. Participants will learn while connecting with others in a social setting. The class is open to anyone of any age who needs help with the topic of the month. Class meets on Jan. 14, Feb. 11 and March 11, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
YMCA’s Kid Fit is a new program designed to help youth from 3rd to 8th grade who are struggling to uphold a healthy lifestyle, with setting healthy goals and attaining them. The program includes a group personal training session and parents are then invited to attend a Healthy Family Home discussion introducing families to healthy eating tips and family physical activities. Meets on Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 8, through April 25, from 4:45 p.m. to 6 p.m.
