Grace’s Theatre Production Is ‘A Little Sketchy’
By Madisson Heinl
Something sketchy is happening on the Grace College campus in Winona Lake. A Little Sketchy, a Back in Five production, will be performed in the Little Theatre located in Philathea Hall on campus.
Back in Five is a group of four students that specializes in improvisational comedy, but when the members of the troupe were presented with the opportunity to write, direct and perform a show centered on sketch comedy, they took it with enthusiasm.
The members of Back in Five cast four talented students to act alongside them in 16 original sketches. Grace College junior and co-director, Eric Totheroh, stated that he enjoys seeing the sketches that he has written “come to life.” Cheryl Spencer, a Grace College senior and co-director agreed explaining, “My favorite part of preparing for the show is getting to see our vision come together …”
Over the past two months, the directors have written and re-written sketches tirelessly. Spencer stated that she enjoys seeing the jokes improve with each rehearsal. Sophomore Jessica Sterner explained how this process affects her as an actress saying that it is a challenge to “accommodate a show that is constantly subject to change, or alteration.”
The actors cast by Back in Five have also labored over memorization and characterization. Sterner explained a typical rehearsal saying, “They are always exhausting and somehow hilarious.” Freshman actor Josiah Shafer said that he finds acting in a sketch show challenging because he must play “a wide variety of characters, including animals.”
The cast of A Little Sketchy believes that all audiences will enjoy the show. Senior Alayna Robinson said that she most looks forward to hearing the audience’s reaction to each of the sketches. Totheroh explained that the cast has “tried to make every sketch relate to some aspect of life, and play off of real life experiences …”
A Little Sketchy is open to Grace College students, faculty and staff as well as those in the community.
A Little Sketchy will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, with an additional midnight showing on Friday. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults and can be purchased in the Tree Of Life Bookstore on Kings Highway in Winona Lake and at Jazzman’s, the coffee shop located in Philathea Hall on the Grace campus, as well as at the door.
