McClone, Andrews Earn Honor
INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of area prep football standouts, Tristan McClone of Warsaw and Tanner Andrews of Tippecanoe Valley, have been honored in a big way by Indiana Football Digest.
The dynamite duo are members of the publication’s 2013 Prime Time 25 and will appear on the cover of the 2013 edition of Indiana Football Digest.
Indiana Football Digest unveiled its Prime Time 25 on Sunday night at its seventh annual Griddy’s awards program in Indianapolis.
McClone, a running back/linebacker, rushed for a single-season school record 1,718 yards his junior season. The humble tailback scored 16 touchdowns for coach Phil Jensen’s squad and also ran for a single-game school record 322 yards in a win at Northridge.
Andrews, a wide receiver/defensive back, helped coach Jeff Shriver’s Vikings post an 8-3 overall mark this past fall and earn a share of its second straight Three Rivers Conference championship at 6-1. The athletic, 6-3 Andrews had 37 receptions for over 700 yards and seven touchdowns, despite missing the final game of the season due to a concussion. Andrews also had an outstanding season on the basketball court as he averaged 17.2 points-per-game to help Valley post a 20-4 mark and win the conference championship and a Class 3-A sectional title.
A trio of area players received all-state honors from the magazine Sunday night. Dan Samuelson, an offensive lineman from Plymouth, and Cody Childress, a punter from Mishawaka, earned Big School All-State accolades. Bobby Cornett, a defensive back from Bremen, earned Small School All-State honors.
The magazine also honored a handful of other individuals with area connections. Quarterback Sam Schrader and coach Bart Curtis, both from Mishawaka, were honored as the Class 4-A Player and Coach of the Year respectively. The Cavemen were Class 4-A state runner-up this past season. Chris Geesman, the longtime, highly-successful former coach at Penn, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dylan Kruis of Elkhart Central received the Badge of Courage Award and sportscaster Chuck Freeby of WHME TV-46 was honored with the Media Award.
The 2013 edition of Indiana Football Digest will debut July 19 at the Grange Insurance North-South All-Star Classic at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
