Warsaw Golfers Second At HOF
PERU – The Warsaw boys golf team started its season in impressive fashion Saturday.
The No. 8 Tigers, led by Jon Schram and Jonny Hollar, finished in second place in the Hall of Fame Tournament held at the Rock Hollow Golf Club.
Warsaw, which finished in a tie for sixth place at the State Finals in 2012, shot a team total of 312 on the par 72 layout to earn a second place finish in the 18-team event.
The Tigers held a one-shot lead over No. 1 ranked Columbus North going into the final hole of the tournament. Warsaw finished with a bogey and a double bogey on the final hole to finish two shots behind Columbus North. It was the second time that the Tigers had placed second in this tournament.
Senior Schram and sophomore Hollar, who both return from last year’s outstanding squad, each shot a round of 75 to lead coach Ben Barkey’s talented team. The pair each finished in a tie for second place among individuals.
Schram has committed to play next year at Ball State University. He tied for eighth place individually at the State Finals last June with a two-round total of 147. Tyler Ostrom, the No. 1 player for the Tigers a year ago, is a freshman member of the Ball State golf team.
Evan Cultice fired a round of 80 for the Tigers Saturday, while Will Petro rounded out the team scoring with an 82. Senior Tim Ahlersmeyer shot 90 for the Tigers. Cultice finished strong by shooting just two-over on the back nine, while Petro turned in a strong performance in his varsity debut. Cultice tied for 18th place in the individual standings, while Petro tied for 29th.
Barkey’s deep and talented team graduated two seniors from a year ago in Ostrom and Bennett Hollar.
Triton finished in 11th place in the final team standings with a 342. Ryan Rapp led the Trojans with a 78 Quentyn Carpenter shot a round of 85, Tanner Shepherd an 88, Lucas Shafer an 91 and Jeremiah Kinsey 103 for Triton.
No. 1 Columbus North, which placed fourth at the State Finals last June, won the tourney championship with a 310. Warsaw was second with its 312, followed by Crown Point (316), No. 3 Floyd Central (321), No. 9 Avon (321), No. 7 Zionsville (332), No. 2 Evansville Memorial (334), Brownsburg (335), Oak Hill (337), Peru (339), Triton (342), Bloomington North (344), Culver Academy (345), Jennings County (357), Fort Wayne Canterbury (358), Lake Central (370), Maconaquah (377) and Rochester (396).
The Warsaw junior varsity squad finished in second place Saturday in the Lancer Freshman/Sophomore Invitational hosted by LaVille.
Brandon Eckert captured medalist honors with a round of 81 to lead the Tigers. Warsaw, the defending team champion, shot a 346 to finish four shots behind champion Valparaiso (342) in the 12-team event. Concord finished in third place with a team score of 358 and Plymouth placed sixth with a 396.
Ryan Cultice shot an 84, Jacob Foster 89, Josh Ahlersmeyer 92 and Reid Cameron 95 for the Tiger JV team. Cultice tied for second place individually, while Foster tied for ninth.
Warsaw returns to action by hosting its own Tiger Invitational April 13 at the Stonehenge Golf Club.
