Meijer Construction Prompts Stoplight Timing Solutions
Noting inspections of all infrastructure have been completed and approved, the Warsaw Plan Commission Monday night approved the final plat for Meijer. The vote also brought about discussion of traffic by the new discount store.
WPC member Mike Klondaris asked if another entrance/exit to Meijer would be added on U.S. 30. He was informed by city planner Jeremy Skinner that the existing cut, which is located east of Anchorage Road/CR 200 North, is the only way to both enter and exit the parking lot and a new stoplight will be added there.
The stoplight was proposed and approved two years ago when all necessary city boards and commissions ultimately approved Meijer construction. While some concerns were addressed about the proximity of another stoplight so close to the Anchorage Road light, Skinner said the lights would also be timed to work together. “All signals will be tied together and you’ll only be able to enter (Meijer) from Anchorage Road,” he added. “(U.S.) 30 will be the exit.”
The discussion on “cuts” along the highway prompted a bit more discussion when WPC member Rick Keeven asked if there are any other areas where additional stoplights would be added. While there are cuts along the highway between Old Road 30 and CR 250 East, Skinner said the distance of those are too close to the existing traffic signals and would not meet state guidelines for adding more stoplights.
However, the fact that all stoplights through Warsaw will be timed, pleased the commission members. “I like the timing being fixed on the lights,” said WPC President Tom Allen. Keeven added, “Hopefully it’s a benefit to the city to have timed lights.”
Six outlots were also approved as part of the Meijer plat. No permits for any new businesses in those lots have been applied for to date.
Meijer is set to open in late June.
