Short-Handed Warsaw Drops Opener
WARSAW – A tough opponent and a shuffled lineup resulted in a 4-1 loss for the Warsaw girls tennis team in its season opener Tuesday.
The host Tigers dropped a 4-1 final to Fort Wayne Canterbury in non-conference play at WCHS.
Warsaw, which suffered through an injury-filled season in 2012 despite winning a sectional championship, was without Rachel Alexander Tuesday. The junior was slated to play No. 3 singles for the Tigers. The extent of Alexander’s injury to her thumb (which is currently in a brace) is not known at this point, but she is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks.
The lone win for coach Rick Orban’s team came at No. 1 doubles. Seniors Olivia Wallin and Marley Smith teamed to defeat Georgia Lea Williams and Selena Savelieff 6-3, 6-4.
The Tigers dropped all three singles matches in straight sets.
Junior Sarah Boyle lost to Leah Barnes 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Junior Jacqueline Sasso was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Chelsea Barnes of Canterbury at No. 2, while junior Blair Findlay lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 to Ava Van Helfteran.
Canterbury completed the 4-1 win as its No. 2 doubles team of Cathy O’Malley and Meghana Pamidi topped senior Lindsay Sciarra and junior Abbi Baum 6-3, 7-5.
Canterbury won the junior varsity competition by an 11-4 final. JV winners for the Tigers were the doubles teams of Mallory Bartel and Anna Hall, Olivia Tucker and Danielle Straits, Mackenzie Riley and Ashley Neubaum and Bonnie Wong and Cheyenne Jackson.
Warsaw returns to action on Thursday with a match at Columbia City.
