Wawasee Sports Wrap – April 9
Softball Crushes Columbia City
It’s not very often Wawasee can say they blasted Columbia City at its home field, but it did just that Tuesday in an 11-3 win.
A five-run third inning followed by three more runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning were more than enough for the Lady Warriors to cruise to its first win of the young season.
Wawasee (1-2) collected 12 hits in the win, highlighted by a grand slam and a two-run double by Priscilla Weikart. Kylee Rostochak added three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs. Weikart, Madi Anderson, Alli Ousley and Kylie Norris all had two hits in the game for Wawasee.
Ousley earned her first victory of the season in the circle, allowing just four hits in the complete game gem, striking out five in the process.
In the JV contest, Wawasee picked up where it left off before spring break in a 16-1 wallop of Columbia City. Seven Lady Warriors had at least two hits, led by four hits and four runs scored by Becca Anderson. Alexis Graber struck out six to get the win.
Wawasee will travel to Manchester on Friday.
Prins Does It Again
One night after rallying to help her team to a win over Lakeland, Sam Prins did it again. Trailing 4-2 in the third set, Prins rallied for the next four points to upset Savannah Rang 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 in the three singles match to give Wawasee a 3-2 stunner at Westview.
Using the formula that beat Northeast Corner Conference foe Lakeland Monday night, the lineup of Esther Hermann at one singles and Katy Ashpole at two singles worked again in Emma. Hermann beat Charlotte Jones 6-1, 6-3 while Ashpole rolled to a love and one victory over Megan Steider.
Katelyn Miller and Chandra Strong grouped for a three and four victory against Jada Antonides and Priscilla Par at one doubles while Westview’s Tessa Zimmerly and Donna Miller rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win against Wawasee’s Natalie Fritz and Molly Smith.
Wawasee lost just six points in winning all three JV courts, with Krissa Keaffaber and Chelsea Carolus losing just one point apiece while Jaclyn Miller also got a JV win.
Wawasee will venture into Northern Lakes Conference play when it visits Goshen Thursday afternoon.
