Knights Ride Into The Sunset
OSSIAN — The fall of night bestowed the best fate of the Knights of Norwell.
After Norwell and Wawasee combined for 23 runs Friday, nightfall ended any shot of further drama as the Knights held on for a 13-10 victory in varsity baseball in Ossian.
Nate Hare had a big offensive night for the Warriors (0-3) by connecting for a double and his first home run of the season. Hare scored two runs and drove in a team-high four. On the mound, however, Hare did not fare nearly as well, allowing Norwell to post an eight-spot in the second inning and being pulled during a five-run third that kept the Knights out front.
Wawasee did jump out to a 5-0 lead on the perennial power Knights, but were only able to score one run in between the 13 Norwell posted. Wawasee would score four runs in the fifth before the game was called for darkness.
James Spera led the Knights (6-1) with a home run while Nate Shelton, Cale Schumm and Reece Dafforn all had doubles. Austin Dettmer picked up the win in relief while Hare took the loss.
Wawasee is scheduled to host Warsaw to open Northern Lakes Conference play Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
