Hollar, Schram Pace Tigers On Links
FRANKLIN – The Warsaw boys golf team continues to prove it’s among the state’s elite.
The No. 2 Tigers turned in an impressive second-place finish Saturday in the Spring Preview at The Legends Golf Club.
Top-ranked Columbus North, for the second time this season, edged out Warsaw for the team championship in the 24-team field which featured nine ranked teams.
Mike VanDeventer of Columbus North earned individual medalist honors with a two-under par round of 70. North shot 307 as a team to edge out Warsaw, which shot 308. North, which placed fourth at the State Finals in 2012, topped Warsaw 310-312 in the Hall of Fame Invitational in Peru on April 6.
Sensational sophomore Jonny Hollar turned in an outstanding effort Saturday to lead coach Ben Barkey’s Warsaw squad. Hollar, one of three returning players from last year’s team that tied for sixth place at State, shot a 71 to finish in second place. Hollar’s excellent round on the course which will host the State Finals June 11-12 included two penalty strokes.
Senior Jon Schram was right behind Hollar for the Tigers. The Ball State University recruit fired a round of 72 to earn third place honors among individuals.
Senior Evan Cultice fired an 82 for the Tigers, while senior Tim Ahlersmeyer shot 83 and junior Will Petro 86.
Triton shot 350 as a team Saturday to place 16th. NorthWood, ranked No. 18, captured fifth place with a 318.
Columbus North won the 24-team event with a 307. The Tigers were next at 308, followed by No. 8 Evansville Memorial (310), No. 5 Carmel (318), No. 18 NorthWood (318), No. 9 Fort Wayne Dwenger (324), Homestead (329), No. 3 Jasper (329), No. 4 Floyd Central (331), Center Grove (332), No. 13 Providence (333) and Greenwood (337). Bloomington South shot 343, followed by Bloomington South (343), Cathedral (343), Munster (350), Triton (350), Bloomington North (356), Franklin (357), Vincennes Rivet (357), Marion (362), Brebeuf (363), Seymour (363), Lafayette Jeff (406) and Logansport (409).
Warsaw will host Triton Tuesday at Stonehenge. The Tigers will then play in the Wawasee Invitational, where they are the two-time defending champions, on Saturday.
