Tigers, Warriors Finish Out Dreary Tourney
PLYMOUTH – The conclusion of the 2013 Northern Lakes Conference Girls Tennis Championship was not the sunniest of days for either the Warsaw or Wawasee tennis programs.
Both teams finished with positive moments, but were well behind the pace of the remainder of the conference, taking the last two spots in the team standings.
Standing at the top of the tennis hill were Northridge, which finished 7-0 during the regular season and claimed titles at one and two singles to lead the charge with 49 team points. Goshen, which had a title at two doubles, were second with 43 points.
Warsaw finished seventh with 16 points after going 1-6 in the regular season and Wawasee had three points after struggling through an 0-7 round robin.
Warsaw and Wawasee went head-to-head twice Saturday, with Esther Hermann of Wawasee beating Sarah Boyle 6-3, 6-0 in the one singles seventh place match while the Warsaw two doubles team of Mallory Bartel and Mattie Doran survived a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 whopper against Natalie Fritz and Molly Smith, also a seventh place match.
Warsaw also had a pair of Saturday wins in Jacqueline Sasso’s 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 triumph over Plymouth’s Mikayla German in the fifth place match and Lindsay Sciarra taking down Goshen’s Sarah Rush 6-3, 6-0 in the three singles third place matchup.
The Tiger one doubles duo of Olivia Wallin and Marley Smith were sixth after suffering a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Concord’s Megan Auger and Emily Davis.
Wawasee had one other win on Saturday, where Katy Ashpole earned a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Concord’s Hailey Stiver at two singles. The wins for Ashpole and Hermann at one singles were the first court wins for Wawasee in NLC play this season.
Closing out Wawasee courts were NorthWood’s Megan Reed over Priscialla Par, two and three, at three singles and the Memorial team of Haley Stouder and Delaney Gilbert going one and love against Jada Antonides and Sam Prins at one doubles. Both were played for seventh place.
Taking championships for the Lady Raiders of Northridge were Sarah Smith at one singles in a three and one victory against Goshen’s Miranda Kay and Ashley Owens defending her two singles title with a four and three score over NorthWood’s Sydney Wysong.
Memorial’s Taelor Grose outlasted Northridge’s Emily Hughes 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to win the three singles title.
Plymouth’s tandem of Marissa German and Andria Shook stood tall after beating Northridge’s Courtney Clark and Olivia Ereksen two and one for the one doubles title while Goshen’s Leah Shetler and Kayci Troyer took care of Concord’s Sam Lutain and Holyn Eldridge 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-2 in the two doubles final.
