Pairings Set For Tennis Sectionals
The Warsaw girls tennis team will not have to wait to begin their bid for another sectional championship.
The host Tigers will play Columbia City in the opening match Wednesday.
Sectional pairings for the tournament were drawn Monday night at the host schools.
Warsaw, which has won the last 12 sectional championships in a row under coach Rick Orban, faces the Eagles Wednesday at 5 p.m. at WCHS in a first-round match of their own five-team sectional.
The Tigers, who beat the Eagles 4-1 in the sectional finale in 2012, have struggled this spring. Warsaw, which graduated just one senior, is 1-10 going into sectional play. That win was a 5-0 verdict over NLC foe Wawasee.
Warsaw, which finished in seventh place in the NLC Tournament which concluded on Saturday, did not play the Eagles during the regular season. The matchup between the two was cancelled due to inclement weather. Columbia City is 10-8 on the season. The Eagles are led by Celine Rongos, who is 17-1 at No. 1 singles this spring.
The semifinals at Warsaw are set for Thursday at 5 p.m. Wawasee plays Whitko and Tippecanoe Valley faces the winner of the Warsaw-Columbia City match.
Wawasee, which is 3-8 on the season, will play Whitko on back-to-back days. The two teams are scheduled to meet Tuesday in South Whitley in a regular-season matchup. The Wildcats are 4-7 on the season.
The title match at Warsaw will be contested on Friday at 5 p.m.
Warsaw has won a total of 22 sectional titles. Columbia City has won two with the last coming in 1981. Wawasee also owns a pair of sectional championship, the last one came in 2000. Whitko and Tippecanoe Valley have never won a girls tennis sectional title.
The winner of the Warsaw Sectional advances to the Culver Academy Regional for a semifinal match on May 21.
Triton will play Glenn in a semifinal match of the Bremen Sectional on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
The Bremen Sectional starts Wednesday with the hosts facing LaVille at 4:30 p.m. The semifinals are Thursday at 4:30 with Triton versus Glenn and defending champion Plymouth taking on the Bremen-LaVille winner.
The title tilt at Bremen is set for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Plymouth has won 12 sectional championships in a row and 28 overall.
The winner of the Bremen Sectional will also advance to play in a semifinal at the Culver Academy Regional on May 21. The regional title match is set for May 22.
Single-round semi states are scheduled for May 25. The eight-team State Finals will be held May 31 and June 1 at three sites in Indianapolis.
