UPDATE: Tragic Accident Claims Moped Rider’s Life
A Warsaw man was killed late Sunday night after crashing his moped and was then struck by a passing vehicle.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department investigators are trying to determine why Brandon D. Hollon, 23, lost control of his moped in the 5000 block of Pierceton Road, and crashed. Hollon was traveling west on the road just west of CR 600 East when he crash and was thrown onto the road.
A witness at a nearby residence immediately called 911 and went to check on Hollon. Officers say a second vehicle, driven by Lance Lucas, 23, of Mentone, approached the crash scene and swerved to avoid hitting the moped. In doing so, he inadvertently ran over Hollon.
Lutheran Air was initially summoned to make the scene and a landing zone was established just after the 10:06 p.m. accident. Kosciusko County Coroner Michael Wilson, however, said Hollon was pronounced dead at the scene from massive blunt force trauma. The crash is still under investigation by his office and the Kosciusko County Fatal Accident Crash Team.
The Kosciusko County Coroners’ Office and F.A.C.T. were assisted by members of the Pierceton Fire Department, Multi-Township EMS, Winona Lake Police Department and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
