Central, Northridge Post Sectional Wins
WARSAW – There were no softball surprises Monday night in first-round play of the Class 4-A Warsaw Sectional.
Elkhart Central dispatched of Goshen 8-2 in the opener of the tournament and defending champion and No. 5 Northridge sidelined Elkhart Memorial 7-2 in the nightcap.
Central (8-13) faces Northridge (23-1) Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the first semifinal game. Host Warsaw (9-18) meets Concord (16-8) in the second semifinal.
The sectional championship game is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Brittany Vanderhoek paced Central with three hits, three stolen bases and two runs scored in its win. Jazzmine Hoelyfield had two hits and two RBI for the Blue Blazers.
Junior Cassie Shelton collected the pitching win for Central as she fanned seven and walked none.
Haley Nixon continued her stellar season in the circle for the Raiders in the nightcap. The junior right-hander allowed six hits, while walking one and striking out seven to run her season mark to 22-1.
Brianne O’Dell, Haley Schrock, Brooke Maes and Nixon each had two singles to pace the 11-hit attack for Northridge, which advanced all the way to the semi state championship game in 2012.
