Dr. James C. Zimmerman
Dr. James C. Zimmerman, D.D.C., 94, of Nappanee, Ind., passed away at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa, Ind., where he has been ill since Christmas of 2012.
He was born May 8, 1919, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Harry and Helen (Weaver) Zimmerman, and was a lifetime area resident. He graduated in 1943 from the Indiana University School of Dentistry and had a dental practice in Nappanee from 1946-1990. He had also taken post-graduate courses at Tulane University and the University of Kentucky. On June 10, 1951, James married Dorothy L. Ritter in Savannah, Mo. She survives.
He was a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II serving as a Dentist with the Combat Engineers. He served in five European campaigns including the D-Day Invasion, Liberation of Paris, and the Battle of the Bulge. James was a former member of the Nappanee Library Board of Directors, and served many years with the Nappanee BZA. He was also a former member of the Nappanee Park Board. He was a member of the Grace Point Presbyterian Church, the Nappanee American Legion Post #154, the Indiana Dental Society, a former member of the Nappanee Masonic Lodge, and the South Bend Scottish Rite.
He is survived by a son: Bruce (Wendy) Zimmerman, Hagerstown, Md.; daughter: Jean M. (Henry) Barger, Fort Worth, Texas; granddaughters: Jennifer Richburg; Stephanie Harbich; and Katie and Beth Zimmerman; two great-grandchildren; and brother: Richard Zimmerman, Milwaukee, Wis.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at Grace Point Presbyterian Church. Funeral services wil be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at Grace Point Presbyterian Church. Reverend Terry Tyler will officiate. Burial will follow at Leesburg Cemetery with military graveside services.
Memorial contributions may be given to Grace Point Presbyterian Church or to the Nappanee Public Library.
