Friends of the Syracuse Library
The Friends of the Syracuse Library have money to spend. Please join and attend the annual meeting on at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 13.
The annual meeting is a time to look at the group’s finances and talk about the best way to spend the proceeds. Plans to staff the annual Bag of Books Sale on Aug. 1-3, will be discussed. The Friends will be presented with requests to help the library with volunteer activities. Please come to thank outgoing officers Gloria Frew, Carol Clark and Janet Laudeman.
Movies
Fantastic Friday Films begin Friday, June 7. Family movies are shown at 11 a.m. and are rated G or PG. Movies for an older audience are shown at 2 p.m. All movies are free with popcorn and are the most recent releases. Children under age 10 need to be supervised by an adult.
Children
Children can come at 2 p.m. to Terrific Tuesdays. Tuesday, June 11 is time to be Digging in the Dirt. Find out how worms are like “Digging for Books” – the summer library theme. Thursday, June 6, children who are signed-up can attend a Digging for Worms Tea Party. Worm burgers will be served. The tea party is invitation only. Children may sign up for a time and date.
Children in the Digging for Books reading program earn a prize each week for reading books from the Syracuse Library, including ebooks from Overdrive. Additional prizes can be earned for telling a librarian about one of the books, or by checking out a read to me doll.
Talk with a librarian and get an extra prize this summer. Children are encouraged to sit with a cookie and some juice while they discuss their book. Miss Gisela is excited about reading this summer. She has a challenge to the library-children: be the one to read the most Dear America books this summer.
Young People
Teens have the opportunity to sign-up in the Beneath the Surface summer reading program to win a $50 grand prize and many weekly coupons and prizes in weekly drawings. Teen Times are at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays. The Wednesday, June 12 meeting theme is, “Get the Scoop”. Sarah Wright, reporter with The Mail-Journal, is coming to share some interviewing techniques along with some standards of fairness in journalism.
Adult Programs
Jim Carpenter is coming to share some ideas about planting to save seeds, grow healthy plants and challenges in the garden. Interested people are invited to come to the Syracuse Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11. Carpenter will talk about techniques for saving seeds and lessons in germination for different types of plants. Questions and comments are invited at this presentation. Indiana is lucky to have a master gardener program that is administered by Purdue University.
Interested in local history, old pictures or the latest in technology? Plan to attend an informative explanation of the process for digitizing community history into the Syracuse-Wawasee Digital Archives. The meeting will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 26. Additional information about the new microfilm reader and local historic sources is from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. The Syracuse Library may be contacted at 574-457-3022.
