Triton Sees Season End
CULVER – The Triton baseball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday night.
The Trojans dropped a 2-0 final to host Culver in a Class 1-A sectional final.
Nick Pritz had a solo home run and a double to lead Culver to the win. Winning pitcher Collin Stevens had a double for the Cavaliers.
Triton, which beat conference foe Culver twice during the regular season, has lost in the sectional final the last three years. The Trojans finish with a record of 13-15.
Senior Pete Kauffman took the loss for Triton. He allowed just two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in working the first six innings of the title game on the mound.
Culver (10-16) advances to play North White Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a semifinal game of the Caston Regional.
In other area sectional games Tuesday night, Elkhart Central and NorthWood claimed tournament titles and Jimtown lost a gut wrenching semifinal contest.
No. 2 Elkhart Central topped Elkhart Memorial 3-1 in the Class 4-A title game at Memorial. Senior Riley Futterknecht fired a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Central won its third straight sectional title. The Blue Blazers, who improve to 28-1 with their 21st straight win, advance to play South Bend Clay Saturday in the second semifinal game of the LaPorte Regional.
NorthWood built a 7-0 lead and held on for dear life to edge Fairfield 7-6 in the title game of the Class 3-A West Noble Sectional. The Falcons scored six runs in their final at-bat in the home half of the seventh inning. The game was moved to Wawasee due to unplayable conditions at West Noble for the second straight day. NorthWood (15-7) will play either Angola or Leo Saturday in the Bellmont Regional.
Jimtown lost a heartbreaker 13-12 to Culver Academy in 12 innings in a semifinal game of the Class 3-A Plymouth Sectional. The Jimmies led 7-2 and 11-4 before the Eagles rallied. Trent Kolden smacked a solo homer in the bottom of the 12th to give Culver Academy the win. The Eagles play South Bend St. Joseph tonight in the sectional final at Plymouth.
