Review: Fast & Furious 6
I wouldn’t have normally entertained the idea of seeing yet another Fast & Furious movie, but my curiosity from the hype got the best of me! Much to my surprise it was a very fun movie! It wasn’t anything I would call a classic, but it was fun to watch from start to finish.
Seeing as it is the sixth installment, and I vaguely recollect even watching its predecessors, I was very happy before the film starts it shows a recap of all the important parts in the other installments, to bring the audience back up to snuff.
It starts off with Dominick Toretto, played by Vin Diesel, and Brian O’Connor, played by Paul Walker, living out there lives in exile and seemingly bored with the new place they are calling home.
Soon after, Dominick receives a visit from Luke Hobbs (The Rock) and he proceeds to procure the assistance of Dom and the rest of his team. After flat out refusal, Hobbs plays his hand and wins with pictures of Dom’s thought to be dead lover, Letty, played by Michelle Rodriguez. She has been spotted by the government as being an accomplice of a group of elite stunt driving thieves lead by a man named Shaw, played by Luke Evans.
The part of the story I thought a bit silly was the “code” thing that both Toretto and Shaw live by. The only difference is Shaw sees people as chess pieces that are easily expendable. Dom feels that everyone in his crew is family and so eloquently states: “You never turn your back on family, even when they do.”
The rest of the story plays out like a cat and mouse game with Shaw being a master strategist. He plays the game like a champ seemingly knowing every move that will be made on him. Pretty much everyone that is not dead in the previous installments makes a cameo at some point, which I thought was cool.
The story, written by Chris Morgan, flowed very well and had little down time of which was laden with cheesy one-liner jokes which kept the seriousness of the group’s task at ease.
Director Justin Lin is, in my opinion the savior of the series as he did a fantastic job in the head seat. He took what should have been a dead franchise and tapped into another vein of the gold mine for Universal.
Overall thoughts:
It is a very good movie to see in theaters and I would recommend that anyone interested in seeing it, do so while it is still at your local cinema. It is a very fun movie and will leave most people eagerly satisfied and anxious for the next installment.
I strongly suggest that you leave the reality side of your brain at home though, as it contains over-the-top stunts that even the most trained professional would have met their demise. Take it as it is and enjoy the ride!
Make sure you stick around for the end of the credits as it shows a teaser for what is going to happen in the 7th film. I will give you a hint: it involves one of the most overplayed recent action stars, other than the Rock! Enjoy the movie!
I give it 7.5 out of 10
