Golf Outing Major Success For Syracuse Chamber
In 2012, the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce had 22 teams participate in its golf outing, and it set up a goal to have 30 teams for 2013 — a goal the chamber met June 18.
Board member and golf outing committee chairman Larry Biller announced during the chamber’s regular board meeting July 10 that the chamber had seen a profit of over $8,800 from the outing; the Legacy Fund will receive $800 from the profits to go toward scholarships for Wawasee High School graduates.
With the success, the chamber is already planning the 2014 golf outing with a new goal of 36 golf teams, which will be split with some teams playing in the morning while others would play in the afternoon.
Biller stated he hopes to have the chamber set up tables at two locations during next year’s event, so chamber board members can greet golfers and give them free water and snacks. Hole sponsors will also be encouraged to set up booths to promote their businesses.
Biller noted thank-you notes had been sent to all the teams and sponsors.
Also concerning fundraising, Beth Kroes suggested the chamber have another Taste of Home, which would feature a chef show and vendors. The last time the chamber hosted the event at Syracuse Elementary School they earned approximately $5,000. Kroes was asked to further research about potentially bringing the event to Syracuse again.
Another matter heavily discussed at the board meeting was about a summer intern after Executive Director Tammy Cotton informed the board that plans for a summer internship fell through. She, however, did state they would have an intern once the school year begins.
Board member Jeri Yoder suggested the board start planning now for a summer intern, possibly with the chamber paying the intern rather than going through another entity to do so. Dan Buchman added they could offer to pay the intern they have during the school year, so they would not have to retrain someone else during the summer. More discussion on the subject will occur in the future.
In other chamber news:
- Board members voted to reimburse Cotton a flat rate of $25 for chamber-related calls made on her personal cellphone.
- Estimates were reviewed from three merchant card service providers. The chamber’s executive committee will talk further with KeyBank on the matter; additionally, Crossroads Bank will be approached for an estimate.
- Cotton received approval to attend the ICEA Tri-State conference in Columbus, Ohio. She will apply for a scholarship to attend the conference.
- North Webster Community Center was welcomed as a new chamber member.
The chamber’s next meeting is at noon Aug. 7 in the chamber office.
