Summer Spotlight: North Webster Sand Volleyball
NORTH WEBSTER – A very sunny and windless Thursday night a block from Webster Lake overlooked sand flying in a parking lot adjacent to the North Webster Community Center. The culmination of the North Webster Sand Volleyball League tournament had semi-final and championship match played on the court southeast of the NWCC, and on a very comfortable night, The Heat Waves were on fire.
After a very strong regular season, The Heat Waves moved into the championship round July 18 unbeaten and awaited the semi-final winner between Top Gun and Solid Force, which was the first game played Thursday night. Strong play at the net and consistent serving had Top Gun take command in game one, 25-18, then emerge from a seesaw battle in the second game to advance to the final, 25-22.
The Heat Waves and Top Gun went back and forth in game one of the final, but unforced errors from Top Gun on defense and the power of Jason Metzger at the net had the top seed charge forward with a 25-15 win in game one. Game two saw a tired Top Gun side falter on the attack while The Heat Waves used a big serve set from Amy Metzger and Jason Metzger to pull away, 25-14, to claim the league title.
The win for The Heat Waves sets up the weekend Dixie Days double elimination tournament, which will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the sand court behind the NWCC.
