Four fire departments were called to an early morning house fire at 11940 N. 450 E., Syracuse.

The initial call came in at approximately 3:50 a.m. to Syracuse/Turkey Creek Fire Department. According to Syracuse Fire Chief Mickey Scott, the home is owned by Jeffrey and Peggy Guyas who were home at the time of the fire, but were able to exit the home. They were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by Turkey Creek EMS.

Upon arrival by the Syracuse/Turkey Creek Fire Department, a full assist from North Webster Fire Department, tanker and manpower assist from Milford Fire Department and manpower from Benton Township Fire Department was requested. Fire officials reported heavy smoke coming from the rear of the two-story structure.

The fire was brought under control at 4:18 a.m. Investigators with Squad 70, the county’s fire investigation team, were called to the scene to determine a cause for the blaze, which reportedly began in the basement of the home. The fire has been ruled as an electrical fire that ignited nearby combustibles.

Damages are estimated at between $30,000 and $50,000. Heavy smoke damage was reported throughout the home.

The Turkey Creek Fire Territory was assisted at the scene by the Benton Township Fire Department, the North Webster Fire Department and the Milford Fire Department. Fire and EMS units remained on the scene until 7:28 a.m.
