Lady Warriors Stay Hot With Win Over Manchester
SYRACUSE – Unscratched, unscathed and unbeaten.
While the season is still young and conference play has yet to start, it is hard to ignore the early success that the Lady Warrior golf team has had so far. Wawasee carried a 3-0 record into Monday night, in addition to its third and first place finishes at the Huntington and Wawasee Invitationals, respectively. The Lady Warriors continued their winning ways Monday night with a 191-223 runaway victory over Manchester at Maxwelton Golf Club in Syracuse.
One of the most impressive things about Wawasee’s fast start is the constant rotation of the starting five. Wawasee picked up the win tonight with two different faces in the lineup then it has had all year. But having multiple lineups throughout the season is no new trick for Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone.
“We have done this before with the boys team. It’s nothing against the girls that didn’t start tonight, I just like to get more girls involved. Tonight seemed like a good night to give some other girls experience in a varsity situation,” stated Coverstone.
The two newbies for the Lady Warriors were Madison Beaman and Megan Goralczyk. Beaman, a freshman, saved par on just one hole but shot a solid 52. Goralczyk also saved par just once on Monday but managed to ink a 54, the juniors lowest match score for the season. Covertsone was pleasantly surprised by both performances.
“I wasn’t sure how Madison would do in her first dual match but she went out and shot very well. Megan is trying to get her score to a point where she can contribute and she shot a 54 which was fine,” said Coverstone.
Golfing the one spot for Wawasee today was Mikala Mawhorter. The sophomore product had a bumpy finish to end an otherwise solid round that included two pars. Mawhorter would finish with a 47. Also inking a 47 on the day was the fantastic freshman, Aubrey Schmeltz. Wawasee’s most successful newcomer highlighted her day with three pars.
Low score on the night for Wawasee was Elizabeth Jackson. The junior had a rough night on the greens but was virtually a rock for her team everywhere else on the course. Jackson highlighted her night by sinking a par putt on number three en route to her round score of 45.
The field was led by Manchester’s Claire Barnett. The Lady Squire’s number one golfer picked up a birdie and two pars on the night. Nina Smith (60), Erin Working (57), Gabby Wilcox (63) and Madison Hire (75) rounded out the starting five for Manchester.
While tonight was a relatively easy win for Wawasee (4-0), there is not time to enjoy it as they get back to work tomorrow night in a triangular meet against West Noble and Mishawaka Marian. Coverstone is definitely a fan of all the golf his team has been playing recently.
“We love being able to get back out there and play again. We have fun and not a lot of the girls get to golf over the summer so this is good for them to get into a groove,’ stated Coverstone. “We are still looking for our best combination of five players and we haven’t found it yet. I think we are definitely improving though. We just need to focus on breaking 190,” the coach later finished.
Tuesday’s meet for Wawasee will again be played at Maxwelton with first tee set for 4:30 p.m. There was no junior varsity match tonight.
