Warsaw Ranked 93rd Smartest U.S. City
Following on the heels of the Indiana State Police findings that Kosciusko County ranked 7th in the state for methamphetamine labs, an extensive study by Lumosity finds some positive news about the intelligence found in Warsaw, Ind.
Lumosity, a brain training program developed with neuroscience breakthroughs to train the brain to achieve the fullest potential, recently conducted an extensive study to determine the smartest cities in the nation. Warsaw ranked 93 in the Top 100 Smartest Cities in America.
According to the Lumosity website, over 40 million people use the brain training techniques and thousands more are joining the learning games each month. Lumosity recently conducted an extensive survey that ranked 478 U.S. cities by “average brain performance score” and found that Ithaca, N.Y., is the brainiest city in the country. In a close second was State College, Pa., and Lafayette, Ind. The findings show many of the smartest cities and towns are home to prominent colleges and universities.
As the study found, many of the top cities and towns on the list play host to prominent colleges and universities. Ithaca is home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, State College is home to Penn State, and Lafayette, Ind., is home to Purdue University.
This result isn’t necessarily surprising, but the reason behind it may go deeper than “people who go to college are smart.” As Lumosity’s data scientist Daniel Sternberg explained, “Neuroscience research has found that those who are engaged in learning and cognitively stimulating activities throughout the lifetime build up a ‘cognitive reserve’ that helps maintain and improve cognitive performance.”
According to Lumosity website, the study involved 2,417,530 participants nationwide. It tested their performance across five cognitive areas: memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention and problem solving. Participants ranged from 15 to 85 years old.
Surprisingly, some of the country’s largest cities – like New York; Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston and Chicago did not make the cut for the most intelligent residents. Another interesting finding was that the list of the top 100 cities contain a great deal of geographical diversity, implying that intelligence is concentrated in pockets and not necessarily spread out over larger regions.
