Whitko Sports Wrap – Aug. 31
TOPEKA – The Whitko volleyball team turned in a strong effort Saturday in the Westview Invitational.
The Wildcats, despite some close matches, ended up 0-4 in the tournament.
Maddie Gawthrop had a strong all-around performance to lead Whitko. Gawthrop totaled seven kills, five aces, 11 blocks and 20 digs on the day.
Whitney Hobbs powered the Whitko offense with 23 kills and 19 blocks at the net.
Elaine Warner had 57 assists from her setter position. Warner also had seven aces and 21 digs. Dana Hobbs led the defense with 40 digs in the four matches.
Taylor Zwick had eight kills and nine blocks and Delaney Ray had seven kills, five aces and 20 digs.
Wildcats Tie Mississnewa
The Whitko girls soccer team posted a 1-1 tie at Mississnewa Saturday.
The hosts led 1-0 at halftime. The Wildcats earned the tie as senior Rachelle Whitaker scored a goal in the final half.
Senior keeper Jordan Hall had 10 saves for the Wildcats.
Whitko, now 1-1-2, hosts Bremen Tuesday.
Runners Compete At Northfield
Whitko’s cross country teams competed in the Northfield Invitational Saturday.
The boys team finished in fifth place with a team score of 161.
Oak Hill won the boys’ team title at 38 with Angola second at 53. Tippecanoe Valley was seventh with a team score of 187.
The girls team took sixth place with a score of 144.
Host Northfield won the girls team championship with a score of 61. Oak Hill was second with a 65.
