Eagles Edge Tiger Tennis Team
WARSAW – The Warsaw boys tennis team could not quite exact a measure of revenge on Culver Academies Wednesday.
The Eagles, who sidelined the Tigers in a regional final last fall, edged the hosts 3-2.
Warsaw collected a pair of singles wins in the rematch of the regional final won by the host Eagles by a 4-1 final in 2012.
Will Petro posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Abel Barrera at No. 2 singles for the Tigers.
Senior Evan Miller topped Josh Thompkins 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for Warsaw.
Sam Concannon beat Sam Rice 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for Culver Academies.
The match came down to the two doubles courts where the Eagles won both positions in three sets.
The duo of Chris Silicic and Martin Fecaretta outlasted Kyle Wettschurack and Nic Jansen 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. The team of Evan Dillon and Nick Haydon rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Caleb Ray and Nikos Schlitt at No. 2.
Warsaw won the junior varsity matchup by a 9-6 final. Winners for the JV Tigers were Andrew Gauger, Justin Stout, David Homme and Drew McCollom in singles play. Also victorious for Warsaw were its’ doubles teams of Cole Baker and Tim Rata, Caleb DeBoest and Hudson Snyder, Chris Stichter and Wesley Shuler, Keeton Bartel and Jean-Luc Baldwin and Evan Ousley and Hayden Steger.
The Warsaw varsity team is now 5-2 overall on the season. The Tigers, who are 2-0 in the NLC, play at league foe Plymouth Thursday. Warsaw then hosts Crown Point Saturday at 11 a.m.
