Conference Clashes On Tap
Storylines abound this week as the prep football season reaches week four already.
Can Warsaw carry the momentum over from a stirring fourth-quarter comeback win over Plymouth last week?
Can Wawasee shock the state and upend the potent, high-scoring Concord Minutemen?
Can Tippecanoe Valley continue its offensive output started last week in a Three Rivers Conference win at Manchester?
Here is a quick look at area games on the docket Friday night.
Warsaw (2-1, 1-0) at Elkhart Memorial (1-2, 1-0), 7:30
Warsaw coach Phil Jensen knows last week means nothing if his favored Tigers don’t take care of business this Friday night.
“It remains to be seen what carryover we’ll have, but what happens this week will answer that,” said Jensen. “That win means we are undefeated in the NLC right now and not chasing anyone.”
The Tigers trailed 19-7 at home to Plymouth before senior quarterback Austin Head threw a pair of touchdown passes to give his team a thrilling 20-19 win in the NLC opener a week ago. The threat of a passing game to shifty Tanner Balazs and Conner McCammack versus the Rockies is huge for an offense seeking balance through the air to go with star tailback Tristan McClone.
“It all came together in that second half last week,” noted Jensen. “We’re trying to be more balanced.”
Warsaw beat Memorial 28-0 a year ago. The Crimson Chargers have struggled to score again this season, putting up just a total of 20 points through three games. Memorial beat a winless Goshen team 13-10 last week.
“We’re not taking anyone lightly and we need to have a workman like attitude,” said Jensen. “Memorial is a dangerous team with the athletes they have. They are hungry. We need to come out ready to go and not wait for something to happen.”
Concord (3-0, 2-0) at Wawasee (1-2, 0-1), 7:30
The Warriors must try to bounce back after a tough, emotional NLC opener last week at Northridge.
Wawasee dropped a 31-14 final in Middlebury to the unbeaten Raiders, coached by former Wawasee boss Tom Wogomon.
“I feel they have responded well,” said first-year Wawasee coach Josh Ekovich. “We have had upbeat practices and focused really hard on our ability to handle adversity.”
Concord, ranked No. 2 in Class 4-A, beat Wawasee 54-7 during the regular season, but only 24-10 in sectional play in 2012.
The Minutemen drilled NorthWood 31-7 last Friday night in Dunlap. Coach Tim Dawson’s potent squad is averaging 37 points-per-game.
Southwood (1-2, 0-1) at Tippecanoe Valley (1-2, 1-0), 7
The Vikings put the fun back into football last week.
Valley shook off an 0-2 start and some injuries to pile up a ton of offense in beating Manchester 58-43 in their TRC opener.
“We’re moving in the right direction,” said Valley coach Jeff Shriver. “Our guys are excited and they saw that a lot of great things can happen for us if we do some of the things we’ve been talking about.”
Star quarterback Ben Shriver returned from a knee injury in week two to have a monster night a week ago. Shriver, who was just cleared to play the day before, completed 19-27 throws for 428 yards and six touchdowns. Standout Tanner Andrews had eight receptions for 290 yards and three scores.
“I was very pleased with the way that Ben came back and threw the ball,” said coach Shriver. “It was a really positive thing. He was elated to be playing. Tanner just had a great night for us too.”
Valley, bidding for its third straight TRC title, faces a Southwood team that lost 41-35 to Whitko at home last week. The Vikings crushed Southwood 45-0 last year.
“They have the top rusher (Nathan Hollars) in the conference and the second leading quarterback and receiver,” said Shriver of Southwood. “They are a much-improved team.”
Manchester (0-3, 0-1) at Whitko (1-2, 1-0), 7
Welcome home Wildcats.
Whitko will get to leave the bus parked this week as they welcome winless Manchester to South Whitley.
The Wildcats ran past Southwood a week ago with its three-headed monster ground game. Whitko ran for 366 yards in their first win of the season with Devin Gerding getting 133, Tanner Hughes 126 and Trace Killian 73.
“The kids felt good about the first win of the season,” said Whitko first-year coach Josh Mohr. “We still are pushing forward with the mindset to improve each week.”
“The ground game will continue to be our focus. However, we will take what the defense gives us.”
Manchester edge Whitko 13-10 a year ago.
“Manchester is a much better team than what their record shows,” Mohr said. “Coach Miller always gets the most out of his teams. I expect them to improve throughout the season. We must have better focus this Friday and be ready for a hard fought game.”
Triton (1-2, 0-1) at Bremen (1-2, 0-1), 7
The Trojans look to get into the conference win column against a strong Bremen team.
“Bremen is big, physical and well coached,” said Triton first-year coach John Johns. “They have great numbers and their tradition speaks volumes. This is a rivalry game.”
Triton suffered a tough 21-19 loss at Culver in the NSC opener a week ago.
“We changed some things and added some things and really had an unproductive first half at Culver,” said Johns. “We were a little confused and I take responsibility for that.
“I ask a lot of our players. I was proud of how they fought back last week and they proved we’re never out of it and our conditioning is better.”
Bremen, which has lost to Plymouth and New Prairie, beat Triton 7-0 last season. The Lions are led by veteran quarterback Kai Slough.
“I want to see us play physical and flying around Friday night,” Johns said. “And we need to limit our mistakes.”
