I am sure many people would not consider it fun to go watch a bunch of elementary school girls play volleyball and it certainly would not be educational. That may be the case unless you are a proud parent of one of those girls and you happen to see life lessons in all that happens around you. I happen to be one of those proud parents and also try to learn from just about anything that goes on around me.
As we are half way through the season I had some interesting thoughts other than the obvious ones related to volleyball. Four things struck me as I watched them play that can help anyone successfully reach their life, career and business goals.
Hustle. As often happens in volleyball, the ball doesn’t go where you intend it to go so you have to pursue a loose ball in order to hit it. Whether you are on the court pursuing a loose ball or pursing your goal, make sure to go after what you want. It’s not coming to you. You have to go and get it! Whatever you want – go and get it. Go after it with everything in you. I am not talking about working 24/7 where there is no time for family, play or relaxation. What I am saying is when it’s time to work – go after it and hustle.
Spike the ball. I told my daughter when you have the opportunity to score – spike the ball! I also told her it doesn’t matter if you hit the ball into the net the last time you tried, keep spiking the ball when you have a chance. When you have the opportunity to call and set a sales appointment, spike the ball – pick up the phone and call! You can’t score if you don’t spike! Even if you missed the last time, keep spiking the ball!
Remember the basics. This year the girls are really emphasizing the fundamentals – passing and setting. They are experiencing some great success, but sometimes after we experience some success we can start to cut corners and take short cuts. All too often this leads to forgetting to do the fundamental things that brought us success to begin with. Go back to the basics of what brought you success in the first place. (Glad to say the girls are sticking with the basics.)
Have fun. Winning certainly makes things more fun. I don’t believe everyone should receive the blue ribbon for participating. I do believe in keeping score to see who wins. The girls are undefeated so far, but more importantly they are having fun. Somehow, as we get older, we focus on working hard and winning, but we forget to have fun along the way.
Who would have thought a bunch of elementary grade school girls playing volleyball could teach us a lesson about success? Hustle. Spike the ball. Remember the basics. Have fun!
