Wawasee Sports Wrap – Sept. 19
After a 9-1 start to the regular season, Wawasee dropped its sixth match of the season Thursday night at Concord, 25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25. The loss to Concord set the Lady Warriors at 0-3 in the Northern Lakes Conference and 11-6 overall.
The nip and tuck matchup with the Minutemen had Lydia Katsaropoulos register 12 kills and 26 digs while Alli Ousley had 29 assists, 21 digs, six kills and five aces. Aly Anderson added 33 digs and Hunter Gaerte tossed in 25 digs and eight kills in the losing effort, little consolation for the change of course for the Lady Warriors.
“One of these times that much heart will be rewarded,” said Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips. “We may not be tall but we give everything. Alli Ousley’s stat line is tremendous and shows the kind of all-around volleyball player she is.”
Concord were also winners of the junior varsity match, taking the pair 25-20, 25-13. Ashley Beer, Kayleigh Rhodes, Becca Anderson and Jada Antonides combined for 25 digs while Taylor Mock had five assists to represent the Lady Warriors, now 7-6 on the season.
The Wawasee varsity will host the Wawasee Invitational this Saturday while the JV will next play Thursday night in the Dig Pink Night at Warsaw.
Barons Slay Warriors
DeKalb wasted little time putting Wawasee in the hole Thursday night in girls soccer, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes. From there, the Barons did just about everything it wanted in an 11-0 victory in the varsity match in Waterloo.
Andrea Oster led the Barons (8-2) with three goals and an assist while Taya Poynter and Kacey Wells each had two goals and an assist. Maddie VanWye chipped in a goal and two assists.
“DeKalb is a good team and they are at a different level than we are right now,” said Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch, whose club drops to 0-11 overall. “We played hard and did not quit, but we were just overmatched today.”
Wawasee next plays Tuesday at Northridge.
Warriors Clip Minutemen
Another grudge match on the gridiron had Wawasee up its mark to 4-0 on the season with a 20-18 freshman football win over Concord.
Statistics from the game in Syracuse were not provided.
Wawasee will play again next Thursday at NorthWood.
