Richard L. Smith
Richard L. Smith, 77, of Rochester, Ind., passed away at 12:10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 12, 1936, in Kokomo, Ind., to Virgil and Dorotha (Bentley) Smith. On Sept. 10, 1955, in Mentone, Ind., he was married to Esther I. Quier. She preceded him in death.
Richard was a truck driver for KG Brown of Mentone, a mechanic, a former custodian for Rochester Middle School and he worked at Rochester Homes. He also was a former director of the Fulton County Civil Defense and did electrical work for Ernie Hiatt. Richard was in the National Guard from 1953 to 1963. He attend the Omega Church of Akron, Ind., and the Cross Road Baptist Church of Gilead, Ind. He was a long time member of the F.O.P.
He is survived by daughters: Kathy Furnivall, Rochester; Kim (Terry) Valentine, Logansport, Ind.; sons: Karry Smith, Holladay, Tenn.; Kevin Smith, Rochester; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five sisters: Eileen Warren, Granger, Ind.; Maxine Hepburn, Warsaw, Ind.; June Ann Senff, Mentone; Ruth Timmerick, Warsaw; Beverly (Frank) Tackett, South Whitley, Ind.; three brothers: Bill (Amy) Smith, Baytown, Texas; Clarence (Shirley), McMinnville, Tenn.; Keith (Sandy) Smith, Warsaw.
He was preceded in death by a son: Karl Smith; sisters: Donna Woodling and Nancy Smith; and brothers: Bob, Tom, Dean and Virgil Smith.
Visitation will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the funeral home with Pastors Thad Stewart and Jason See officiating. Burial will take place in Athens Cemetery, Athens, Ind., with graveside military rites being performed by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard.
