Warsaw Ladies Win League Pair
ELKHART – The Warsaw girls cross country team capped its conference season in style Tuesday night.
The Tigers, led again by Allison Miller, completed a strong showing in the Northern Lakes Conference with a pair of wins.
Freshman Miller was the individual winner as Warsaw defeated Concord and Plymouth in the NLC regular-season finale at Ox Bow Park.
Miller, fresh off a superb effort to win her division race at the Culver Academies Invitational Saturday, won Tuesday in a top time of 20:37 over the 5K layout at Ox Bow.
Warsaw topped host Concord 23-34 and Plymouth 21-40 to finish at 6-1 in league action. The Tigers lone loss was a 23-36 setback to No. 12 Northridge on Sept. 17 in an NLC triangular with NorthWood and the Raiders in Nappanee.
“The plan tonight was to end up 6-1 in the NLC and we did that,” said Warsaw coach Scott Erba. “The big thing is that we just came off two big meets (a win over Wawasee at home last Tuesday and the Culver Academies Invitational Saturday). This was a good preview of this course for our girls for Saturday and the NLC Meet.
“The slow times were a Tuesday night thing. No one likes to get on the bus and travel and then run meets like these. We had a vigorous workout on Monday and the girl’s legs were not feeling swell tonight as expected.”
The Tigers, who have a much different philosophy this season with a pack it in mentality, continued to do that Tuesday. The team, which placed 19th at the State Finals in 2012, lost star Ashley Erba, along with Sarah Ray (their No. 2 runner) from last season. Erba, now at Providence College, was the state cross country champion in 2011 and the runner-up in 2012. Ray was a force for Warsaw last year in her first year running cross country.
“We’re more compact as a team this year and that is important with the girls more together,” said Erba. “I’ve been really pleased with what they have accomplished so far. They’ve made great progress from last year and I’ve enjoyed coaching this team. And I think their best is still ahead of them.”
Brooke Rhodes was fourth overall in a time of 21:05 for Warsaw in the two wins Tuesday. Hannah Dawson was fifth in 21:18 with Madeline Hooks eighth in 21:40. Aletheia Burritt was 11th overall in a time of 22:14.
The Tigers had a total of 11 runners finish in the top 20 Tuesday. Emma Hayward was 12th in a time of 22:23, followed by teammates Emma Lemon in 13th (22:30), Claire Kehler in 14th (22:39), Mallory Hooks in 16th (22:54), Charlene Orr in 17th (22:57) and Hannah Thompson in 20th (23:20).
Warsaw also had Kendra Paton finish in 21st overall in a time of 23:22. Michaela Roark was 25th in a time of 23:48, followed by teammates Courtney Sainer in 29th (24:23), Alexis Himes 30th (24:28), Jessica Madden 33rd (26:15), Daisie Poe 37th (27:13), Shyanne McFadden 38th (27:34), Alexis Winters 40th (27:36), Lauren Brown 45th (29:00) and Victoria Rios-Rivas 46th (30:14).
Warsaw will return to Ox Bow Park on Saturday to try and upend the No. 12 Raiders in the NLC Meet. Northridge completed a perfect 7-0 NLC regular season with a 22-39 win at Elkhart Memorial in league competition Tuesday night.
“We’re the underdogs to Northridge Saturday and we know that,” said Erba. “They are the defending champs and it’s going to be great competition. I think it’s going to be a great meet on Saturday and both teams know they have to run their best.”
