Grace Ladies Claim Conference Win
WINONA LAKE – Grace netted three goals in a five-minute span to unravel St. Francis 3-2 in a crucial Crossroads League match on Saturday.
Jordan Hairgrove scored twice to help Grace’s comeback, maintaining second place for the Lady Lancers (9-6; 6-1 CL) in the league standings.
The teams played evenly in a physical first half, but it was the Cougars (9-6; 4-3 CL) who scored first. St. Francis’s goal at the 22:23 mark was the only tally of the first half.
Grace picked up its offensive pressure in the second half, tallying nine shots after halftime. The game-tying goal came from Kaitlan Wiles at the 61:43 mark off an assist from Holly Bennett.
Less than two minutes later, the Lady Lancers were on top when Hairgrove scored in a crowd in front of the net.
Hairgrove scored what proved to be a vital goal at the 66:55 mark. Mallory Rondeau beat a defender on the right edge of the penalty box and crossed a ball to Hairgrove for a finish in the box.
The match continued in its physicality after Grace’s third goal, racking up 25 fouls and three yellow cards overall. St. Francis added a late goal in the last four minutes of regulation, but it was not enough to knot the score.
As a team Grace held an advantage in shots at 13-9 and in corner kicks at 7-4.The Lady Lancers also outdid the Cougars in shots on goal by 8-3.
Saturday’s match was also Grace’s Senior Day, honoring the contributions of Carmen Barnhill, Hannah Alcorn, Keeley Booher, Lauren Becker, Emily Hickerson, Jackie Seal and Jalisa Thayer. The seniors have won 48 games in their careers which is the second-most victory total in program history.
With the win, Grace finds itself in sole possession of second place in the Crossroads League. The Lady Lancers have two regular-season games remaining, which are both on the road next week. Grace will travel to third-place Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday before concluding the year next Saturday at Marian.
