WCPL Story Times 2.0
By DUANE HERENDEEN WCPL Children Services supervisor
In the past few months, the budget shortfall has affected many aspects of what the Warsaw Community Public Library can offer here at the library, and Story Times has not gone untouched. We still wanted to offer high quality programs for preschool and younger children, but needed to do them with less staff. In looking at options, we decided to combine what had been individual age themed Story Times. We now offer two Story Times for two distinctly different age groups.
On Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m., Mrs. Stephanie presents a themed Story Time geared for ages two and three. It’s a half hour program that encompasses stories, singing, socializing, creating, and movement. Because twos and threes are still learning about times of structure and cooperation, this program is a great way to introduce them to a semi-classroom like environment. As we know, it’s never too early to read to children, and Story Time is a great way to introduce younger children to the diversity of books. With fun songs and finger plays, the children get to interact and discover that everything they do can be a learning experience. Simple crafts at each Story Time help children experience fine motor skills activities and strengthen the power of their imagination as they customize each craft to their interest.
On Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m., Miss Amy or myself, enjoy 45 minutes of a preschool like interaction with 4- and 5-year-old children. Incorporating books, songs, games and crafts, we casually introduce concepts and ideas that preschool aged children experience. Our crafts tend to be a little more open so the children can think outside the box and express their creativity. Interaction with other same aged children gives them a great opportunity to expand on socializing skills. We reinforce the resources the library can offer them through explanations, examples, and fun!
Our Story Times are a great opportunity to visit the library on a weekly basis. We do ask that you register in advance so we can have an idea of craft needs. As always, you are encouraged to sit down on the rug with your child and interact with them as we all learn from each other. The earlier children discover the power and joy of learning, the easier their education years will be. Let the Warsaw Community Public Library be a part of that experience.
