Central Claims Sectional Title
WARSAW – The Elkhart Central volleyball team added to a historic season in a big way Saturday night.
The Blue Blazers topped city rival Elkhart Memorial 3-1 to claim the championship of the Class 4-A Warsaw Sectional.
Central, which has set a program record with 28 wins this season, earned just its’ second sectional title ever. The last sectional championship for Central came in 1973.
The Blue Blazers, who lost 3-2 to Memorial during the regular season, won 25-15, 17-25, 25-18, 25-15.
Senior star Azariah Stahl once again provided the power for the Central offense. The outside hitter and Purdue recruit had 26 kills to go with 17 digs and two aces.
Chelsea Bettis led Memorial, which saw its’ streak of six straight sectional championships come to an end, with 12 kills,
Coach Yolanda Stahl’s Blue Blazers improve to 28-3. Memorial’s season ends at 23-12.
Central advances to play at No. 15 Penn Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a regional matchup. The winner of that match earns a spot in the Huntington North Semistate Nov. 2.
Penn, which won back-to-back Class 4-A state championships in 2010 and 2011, defeated Mishawaka 25-21, 25-14, 25-12 Saturday night to win its’ own sectional. The Kingsmen have won six consecutive sectional titles.
Central lost a 3-2 final to Penn at home on Sept. 5 in a Northern Indiana Conference clash.
