Irish Set To Honor Diggins
SOUTH BEND – Skylar Diggins raised the bar as a hometown hoops hero here.
The University of Notre Dame, on Saturday, will appropriately enough in turn raise Diggins’ No. 4 jersey into its Ring of Honor.
Diggins, a former superstar at South Bend Washington High School, will become just the fifth Irish player inducted into the Ring of Honor.
The super smooth southpaw will be honored prior to a 2 p.m. tip-off versus Valparaiso University in Purcell Pavilion.
The ceremony to honor Diggins will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Fans are encouraged by Notre Dame to arrive early and be in their seats by the start of the event.
Diggins, now a member of the Tulsa Shock in the WNBA, will join former Irish players Ruth Riley, Austin Carr, Adrian Dantley and Luke Harangody in the Ring of Honor. It was announced Friday that former Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Digger Phelps will be inducted into the Ring of Honor in January.
Diggins, a 2013 Notre Dame graduate, led the Irish to three straight Final Four appearances. The Irish finished as runner-up to Texas A & M in the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and as runner-up to Baylor in 2012. Diggins led Notre Dame to a 35-2 mark last season, including a 16-0 mark to win the Big East Conference regular-season title and also the program’s first-ever Big East Tournament championship. The Irish lost 83-65 to UConn in the Final Four.
Diggins, a 5-9 guard, finished her Irish career first in program history in points (2,357), steals (381), games started (144) and double figure scoring games (121) among other categories. She is the only player in Irish history, women’s or men’s, to scored 2,000 points and have at least 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 steals in their collegiate career. Diggins was a four-time All-American and twice the Big East Player of the Year.
Diggins had a prolific prep career at South Bend Washington. She led the Panthers to a 102-7 mark with four straight trips to the state championship game. Washington won the Class 4-A state title in 2007. Diggins, who earned Miss Basketball honors along with National Player of the Year accolades as a senior, finished third in state girls basketball history with 2,790 career points.
Diggins was the third overall pick in the WNBA Draft this past April. She averaged 8.5 points and 3.8 assists per game her rookie season.
