Tigers Want To Make Mark At State
WARSAW – The Warsaw boys swim program has quite the nice little streak of sectional championships going.
Coach Nate Long wants to see that tradition continue with a little more added to it the following week at the end of the 2013-14 season.
“We want to keep adding to the sectional streak, but this year we have a lot more guys focused on State,” said Long.
The Tigers, who open the season at Manchester Nov. 26, have won six sectional titles in a row.
Warsaw boasts just one senior this season in JD French. He was a member of the sectional championship 400 freestyle relay team a year ago, teaming with Jayden Parrett, Spencer Davidson and Andrew Thrasher to earn a spot in the State Finals.
“I just want to continue to improve and help the team this year,” said French. “My freshman year was the first time I’d swam, so it’s been a long road to get where I’m at.
“This team is close knit with a positive attitude this year. I’m definitely excited. We want to send more people to State and score more points at State this season. I just want to make this year a good one and a memorable one. Getting to State is real important to me.”
French is likely to swim the 100 and 200 freestyle events as an individual this season, along with the pair of freestyle relay races.
The 400 freestyle relay team, unfortunately, was disqualified at the State Finals prelims last season due to a false start.
The Tigers will be led by juniors Parrett and Davidson. The pair of standouts each won a pair of individual sectional titles as sophomores and Long expects more big things from them this season.
“Jayden and Spencer are the ones setting the tone for everyone,” said Long. “The dominoes start with them for us. I’d like to see both of them swim four times at State (two individual events and two relays).
“Our big goal this year is to have our team make a showing at State. We want to be swimming on Saturday (the day of the finals at State). I’m expecting it to be an exciting year.”
Long has pretty simple expectations for his only senior.
“I just want JD to be the best leader he can be,” Long remarked. “Just do what he can for the team.”
