Lady Warriors Too Much For Warsaw
WARSAW – It became a matter of depth in deciding things between Wawasee and Warsaw’s girls swim teams. A deeper Wawasee roster stole points in several areas to defeat Warsaw 118-67 Saturday morning at the WCHS Community Pool.
Wawasee won eight of the 12 events, and in Warsaw taking the other four, Wawasee finished second-third-fourth in three of the individual events and second-third in the 200 free relay, securing more than enough points to move to 3-0 this season and 1-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
Wawasee’s duo of Paige Miller and Bre Robinson did the heavy lifting, both accounting for two individual and two relay combo wins. Miller looked very strong in the 200 free (1:58.24) and 500 free (5:16.74), and wasn’t really challenged in either race by runner-up Cynthia Juarez of Warsaw.
Robinson was slotted into her familiar 100 free and was challenged by Warsaw’s Brenna Morgan, but swam a state-level time of 52.51. Morgan, a very speedy freshman, wasn’t far off at 53.72. Robinson cruised in the backstroke at 57.47. Morgan, on the other hand, won the 50 free at 25.24 but had Wawasee hands touching the wall in three consecutive advances just behind Morgan.
Miller, Robinson, Kayla Hershberger and Shelby Adams took the medley relay at 1:55.85 and Kendra Miller replaced Adams for the 400 free relay to help Wawasee to a 3:48.38 win. Adams added a win in the individual medley at 2:20.64.
Wawasee’s eighth win came from diver Tori Sylvester, who continues to raise her personal bar with a career-best 211.35 score Saturday morning to open the day’s activities.
“I think we did great,” Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson said. “I was moving some kids around again today to see how well we could do in some areas and was really impressed.
“I think there were definitely some moments in the meet where kids stepped up and did a really good job. Kayla Hershberger dropped a couple seconds in her events, Anna Park swam a 26-split without goggles on (in the 200 free relay). Caitlin Clevenger didn’t know she was going to swim the fly, went out and swam a 1:09. A phenomenal swim for her today.”
Morgan was the opening leg of the victorious 200 free relay for the Lady Tigers, swimming with Juarez, Ashley Van Wormer and Erin Sandberg in a 1:47.04 triumph. Sandberg swam a smooth 1:07.90 in the butterfly and Van Wormer looked in form in the breaststroke after a 1:10.80 win.
[*** ERROR: Weaver X-Plus Shortcoder undefined id: 'spo-photo' *** ]Being just two meets into the season after beating Manchester last Tuesday to open the duals schedule, Warsaw head coach Nate Long isn’t worried about the result. In fact, quite the opposite from the boisterous Tiger leader.
“It always helps to have a fast, competitive meet this early in the season,” Long stated. “It’s always nice to swim like this. It’s unexplainable to swim like we did today, so early. Our girls team is so new to high school swimming. All of them did so well.
“Charlene Orr dropped 10 seconds in the 500,” Long continued. “Kalista Dobbins stepped up and swam the butterfly for us and did very well. I could go through the whole list. This was a great day for us.”
Wawasee will return to swim competition Tuesday at Memorial, but divers will meet Monday at Memorial. Warsaw will return to NLC action Thursday at NorthWood.
