Tigers In Form, Look The Part In Rivalry Win
WARSAW – It is just the first week of the boys swim season, but the feel and performances from Saturday morning’s dual between Warsaw and Wawasee had a late-season vibe. Warsaw put on the show for the most part, taking 11 of the 12 events in a 120-59 victory.
The stars were shining for Warsaw, and some scintillating earlier than expected for a November meet.
Spencer Davidson and Jayden Parrett posted unreal numbers for week one of the swim season. Davidson’s 59.09 in the breaststroke topped his state finals performance from last February while Parrett was hovering near state qualifying times already in the 100 free (49.60) and backstroke (54.92). Davidson also rocketed to a 22.85 in the 50, a time that will surely raise some eyebrows as the Northern Lakes Conference season begins.
“I wasn’t expecting this, not at all,” chuckled Warsaw head coach Nate Long. “To get those big performances from Spencer and Jayden, but also from Josh Miller, Matt Wildman, Hudson Snyder, Zach Taylor. The whole team was on. It’s unbelievable to get this after just two meets.”
Parrett, Davidson, Taylor and Wildman also teamed for a win in the medley relay (1:42.11) and the grouping of Parrett, Davidson, Miller and Ethan Cook took the 400 free relay with a 3:27.79.
Taylor was also on fire out of the gates, winning the IM – an event Warsaw swept – with a 2:06.78, right near his state time from last season and Taylor also held off Wawasee ace Logan Brugh in the butterfly with a 57.10 to Brugh’s 57.70. Brugh had the only Wawasee win on the day, jetting out a big lead in the 500 and not looking back at 5:04.96.
[*** ERROR: Weaver X-Plus Shortcoder undefined id: 'spo-photo' *** ]Cook was a winner in the 200 at 1:55.63 and joined Miller, Wildman and Mac Pelo for a 1:37.55 showing in the 200 free relay.
Diving was all Warsaw, literally, as Nick Bell was the winner at 149.20 and teammate Tyler Paseka at 144.70 as the two competitors.
“I don’t know what the secret formula is to why we are doing so well, but we are going to keep doing what we have been doing,” Long stated. “I told my coaches, something is working, and we agreed to just keep practices going like they have been and head into the NLC meets and hopefully just keep on this awesome run we have been on.”
Wawasee, which opened its boys season Saturday morning with the loss, still have much to gain as its schedule will fill quickly with four more NLC duals and its home invitational all before Dec. 22.
“It was a tough meet for us because Warsaw is so strong and they have so many kids who are fast,” said Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson. “They have so many state-level kids. I thought some of our boys really stepped up. We had so many swims that were really good, and with this being such a young group, it was a hard meet for me to put together. I just don’t know where their positions will be.
“It was a learning experience for me as well as for the younger kids. Much like the girls, we’ll move some kids around and see if we can find the best spot for them.”
Warsaw (2-0, 1-0 NLC) will go back to work Thursday with a road dual at NorthWood.
